"And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?" — Genesis 3:9
"And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads." — Revelation 22:4
Jesus once said, "Let the dead bury their dead" (Matthew 8:22). Follow that strange sentence and the whole Bible comes into focus: we are born physically alive but with our spirit separated from God's Spirit — the second death, which becomes eternal apart from God's mercy — and Jesus came not to improve the dead, but to give them life. "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3).
This sixteen-chapter book follows the first question God ever asked a human being after sin entered the world — from Adam hiding among the trees to the redeemed who see His face. Every chapter closes with five reflection questions and a prayer, so it works as a personal study or a sixteen-week small group.

(Genesis 3:9). Every chapter adds a short Word Study. The brackets are our own study notes, not part of the inspired text, and where scholars differ the notes say so.

Introduction — The Question That Never Stopped Echoing
Epilogue — Answering the Question
What does "Where art thou?" mean? God knew where Adam was; the question exposed the broken relationship and was the first act of grace after the fall.
What did Jesus mean by "let the dead bury their dead"? He called living people dead: alive in body (untouched yet by the first death) but with their spirit separated from God's Spirit — the second death.
What is the second death? The separation of our spirit from God's Spirit because of sin — present now, ended in Christ, and made eternal for those who die still rejecting Him (Revelation 20:14).
What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth? Hearts made alive by the Spirit responding to the God revealed in Jesus Christ (John 4:23–24).
